What does POST stand for and what does it indicate when it runs?

Power-On Self-Test; it checks basic hardware components during boot and signals failures with codes/beeps.

POST stands for Power-On Self-Test. It’s a firmware routine that runs automatically when the computer is powered on, before the operating system loads, to check that essential hardware components are present and functioning (CPU, memory, basic I/O, and often video). If POST completes without errors, the system continues to boot the OS. If a problem is found, it halts the boot and signals the issue with beep codes or diagnostic codes on a display/LEDs, helping identify which component is faulty.

Primary Operating System Test; validates OS boot only.

Power-On System Trial; checks software integrity.

Peripheral Onboard Status Test; tests USB devices after boot.
